A Blessing a Day: My Computer

November 17, 2007 · 2 Comments

Each day from now until Thanksgiving Day, I plan to post something that I’m thankful for.

NOVEMBER 16–My Computer

The usefulness of something is always more apparent when it is gone or inoperable.  At the moment my computer is the latter.  It is in the shop and might be out later today.

I could live without access to this blog or to the ones I enjoy reading.  Somehow I could manage without Google.  However, I’m enrolled in an online course and I must have access to the Internet in order to get my work in this week.  Fortunately my sister has lent me her laptop.

I won’t go into the pros and cons of computers.  We users all know what they are.  But overall I am very thankful for my computer and for the genius that went into designing it.

I think that how frustrated I get when my computer is acting up is an indication of how much I rely on it, both for work and enjoyment, and how much I appreciate having one.

Since I spend most of my day at the computer, between a job that is 100% computer-based (my job is to document whether changes to computer programs and access are done properly) and using the Internet to read and comment on blogs (mostly worldontheweb.com but I come here occasionally) and to do practical tasks like paying bills, handling my library account, reconciling my checkbook, and of course email, it’s hard to imagine spending a whole day away from a computer. (Here I am on a Sunday afternoon at the computer.)

But occasionally for some reason I do spend a day – or at least most of it – away from the computer. Yesterday we spend most of the day going to Ames to hear our older son sing in the All-State choir. And I spent two weeks in October on ad hoc teams in other divisions of our company, in the warehouse and on the floor in the plant.

I’m surprised at those times both how normal a day can seem without having touched a computer – and also how happy I am to get back on the computer to check the blog the next day.

When my husband wanted to get our first home computer, I went along with it only reluctantly, as it seemed such a luxury. When he suggested a second one for our son, that seemed even more extravagant. But now we have one apiece, and when someone wants the “main” computer (which is the one I normally use) because it has something not available on one of the others, I feel slightly deprived until I can get back on.

(Which generally lets me know I need to go do something else, like read a book, pray, go for a walk, wash the dishes.)
