Pieter Brueghel the Elder was born about 1525 in either the Netherlands or Belgium.  He is known for painting landscapes and scenes of peasant life.  His painted in a simple style similar to that of Hieronymus Bosch.  He is probably the first Western artist to paint landscapes for their own sake.  He died in 1569.  His sons, Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel, were also painters.

Pieter Brueghel the Elder spelled his name without the h.  He is often called “Peasant Brueghel.”

I bought an overview of Bruegel by Walter Gibson from the Thames and Hudson World of Art series. This card deck uses images related to Bruegel’s Netherlandish proverbs that looks fascinating. I haven’t found a copy yet to study.

The proverbs remind me a bit of The Ship Of Fools by Sebastian Brant.

Thanks for posting. My first grader just studied The Elder’s “Children’s Games” a couple weeks ago.

My education growing up didn’t include this kind of stuff, so I get the joy of learning right along side her. And K12 gives pronunciations, too so now I can really sound like I know what I’m talking about! I love education in this computer age.

When I was a child my sister and I did a lot of jigsaw puzzles. One puzzle she gave me was “Children’s Games.” It was one of the harder puzzles, compared to some of my others (almost all Springbok 500-piece puzzles), so by the time I was done I had spent a lot of time staring at Brueghel’s work.
These days I think I’d enjoy doing one by Bosch.
