Things I Wonder About II

August 17, 2008 · 6 Comments

When I research my ancestors, I wonder if any of them ever stopped to think that someday a descendant would learn about them and help keep their existence known.

If all the people in the world spoke one language, would we finally live in peace with each other?

If some rich person promised to provide for the care of every “unwanted” baby, would some women still choose abortion?

If you could travel back in time, would you actually enjoy the experience?

Why is an apple the traditional gift for a teacher?  Why couldn’t it be a Ford Mustang instead?

Since the Hebrew language is written from right to left, is God left-handed?

Is there any way in which Barack Obama could lose the election and it not be chalked up to his being black?

Why was Michael Phelps, of all people in the world, blessed with the perfect swimmers’ body?

Do the people who have died and gone to heaven laugh or cry about the stupid things that we do down here?

Which is easier–to spout silly, optimistic platitudes when somebody has died or to rage against God and become a nihilist?

Why is it that some people who wouldn’t kill a cow to save themselves from starvation would agree with killing an unborn human being?

Do you ever think about not existing?  Doesn’t the fact that you can think about it prove that you exist?  What would it mean not to exist?  Could it even be possible not to exist?

Will human beings ever learn to strike a perfect balance between total freedom and total control?

Ha ha! I’m with you on the Ford Mustang for teachers part. That’s great!

    RG’s Reply: Thanks. :)

    My thoughts:

If all the people in the world spoke one language, would we finally live in peace with each other?

Nah. If I recall correctly, the Union and Confederate armies both spoke English.

RG’s Reply: Good point. So much for Esperanto.

If some rich person promised to provide for the care of every “unwanted” baby, would some women still choose abortion?

Yes, because not every woman is able or willing to undergo childbirth.

RG’s Reply: If she is unable, that’s a different issue. There are medical procedures that usually can be done instead of abortion. If she is unwilling, then she should avoid pregnancy.

Is there any way in which Barack Obama could lose the election and it not be chalked up to his being black?

Not his being black, but other people having problems with his being black. Racism, in other words. Given the amount of hysterical racism surrounding Obama’s candidacy, I don’t think we can ignore racism as one cause for a loss by Obama, but it would certainly not be the sole cause, considering his awkward pandering, his being framed as an out-of-touch elitist, etc.

I think it is unlikely Obama will lose.

RG’s Reply: Racism would be given as a cause, I’m sure. I don’t believe it, myself. I think the election will be close. No predictions.

Why is it that some people who wouldn’t kill a cow to save themselves from starvation would agree with killing an unborn human being?

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t kill a cow to save her/himself from starvation. And half my family is vegetarian.

    RG’s Reply: Hmm. . .

Do you ever think about not existing? Doesn’t the fact that you can think about it prove that you exist? What would it mean not to exist? Could it even be possible not to exist?

In order: yes, I don’t know, it wouldn’t make a difference to me since I wouldn’t exist, yes.

    RG’s Reply: Hmm. . .

    1. Our ancestors were too busy trying to survive to consider that someone would care about them. Otherwise they would have kept better records.

    RG’s Reply: Good point.

    2. Already answered, language has nothing to do with war. Confederate/Union, Colonies/England
    3. Probably some wouldn’t want to carry the baby to term.
    4. Probably not, but it would help understand history.
    5. Apple vs. Mustang. It has to do with money. Football coaches get cars.

    6. It only means the Hebrews chose that way, just as the English drive on the wrong side of the road.

RG’s Reply: This one was nothing but a joke.

    7. “Chalked up” is the key. It’s his experience and liberal politics, but racism might be blamed.

RG’s Reply: That’s my guess, too.

    8. Michael Phelps doesn’t have the “perfect” swimmer’s body, just the most nearly perfect so far. Somebody had to be best.
    9. I doubt we look at things the same way.
    10 Platitudes/rage-no idea.
11 As for killing a cow, I agree with Julia
    12 Never thought of non-existing.

13 Balance between freedom & control: No, but our Constitution is the best attempt so far.

    RG’s Reply: I agree.

“… just as the English drive on the wrong side of the road.”

    Here, Here!!

I knew you were joshing at #6, that’s why I said “wrong side of the road”. It’s only wrong when people are agreed on a common or “correct” side.

I’d say we have them by sheer numbers!!! The right side of the road IS the RIGHT side of the road!!
